Natal Midlands Meander Cycle Routes
Join us for a weekend away, escape the fast lane and simply unwind. For the more energetic a number of different cycling options are available. For the spouses there are scenic riverside walks, splendid birding opportunities and lazy swimming in crystal clear pools.
Day 1
After arrival at Hawklee House set off for an afternoon cycle (41 kms) towards Kamberg Nature Reserve, famous for the world's finest rock art and enjoy a home brewed sundowner at Nottingham Road before returning "home".
Day 2
After a leisurely breakfast cycle from Hawklee Country House, through Nottingham Road Village, along the R103, enjoying the Natal countryside and green farmlands. One cycles past the famous Michael House School for Boys, founded in 1896. Lunch will be at Hebron Haven Hotel in the picturesque Dargle Valley on the banks of the Umgeni River. The afternoon cycle continues through the beautiful Dargle Valley (5 to 6 hours cycling - 73kms).
Day 3
An early start and after 21 kms stop for breakfast at a coffee shop. Then cycle through forest plantations and enjoy lunch at the Karkloof Falls, where a graceful plume of water plunges to black rocks below.
Look out for the rare Karkloof Blue Butterfly, symbol of the Midlands Meander. After a picnic lunch continue towards Howick, past the Midmar Dam and then stop at the spot where Nelson Mandela was captured before the famous Rivonia Trial. The rest of the afternoon cycle is in the spectacular Dargle Valley (7 to 8 hours cycling - 120 kms with packed lunch).
Day 4
Sleep in or go for a 2hr cycle through Fort Nottingham Reserve. (as per option 1) Depart for home at around 11am.
EXTRA OPTIONS:
Day 3 may be replaced by Option 2
Option 1
For the birders (2 hrs cycle). Cycle to Fort Nottingham Reserve and enjoy the tranquility of the countryside while trying to spot that elusive feathered variety.
Option 2
Early drive to Sani Pass Hotel for pick-up at 10am. The incredibly dramatic Sani Pass climbs steeply from the lush farmlands of Kwa-Zulu Natal into the mountain Kingdom of Lesotho through the uKhahlamaba Drakensberg Park - a world heritage site. Once at the top you will enjoy awesome views from 2873metres above sea level. We will visit remote mountain tribes and experience their customs and music. Enjoy the colorful alpine flora and have lunch in the highest pub in Africa. Then mount our bikes and descend the pass!!! At 4.30 pm drive back to Hawklee House. (2-hour cycle)
