Swaziland Cycle Tour

This small, land-locked kingdom has wonderfully varied scenery in a very small area. Mountains and valleys, forests and plains are to be found as the landscape moves from the highveld in the west, through the central middleveld, to lowveld in the east. Yet the whole country can be driven across in a matter of hours. Nature Reserves and National Parks are spread across the country and there is no shortage of safari experiences.

Meet & greet at ORT and drive to Kwa Madwala, located in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. Meaning “place of the rock” in the local Swazi tongue, Kwa Madwala lies on the southern side of Kruger National Park and is home to their fabulous Manyatta Rock Camp & Gazebo Game Lodge. Once we have settled in, we will do bike set up. After dinner, an evening game drive is an option. Lunch will be along the way.


Cycle out of Kwa Madwala Reserve and onto the Jeppes Reef Road – 14 kms, rack bikes & continue to Swaziland border control. Once border formalities completed, we drive a couple of kilometers & then start cycling on a rural road through little villages towards Pigg’s Peak. The road is hilly, but the only traffic on the road – a few cattle. A picnic lunch will be enjoyed along the road. Cycling distance: 40 kms. Degree of difficulty: 8/10

After breakfast cycle through a network of trails which winds through the forest, crossing meandering waterways towards Phophonyane Falls Lodge. From the Lodge take a hike to see to the Falls – exposed at this point are some of the world`s oldest rocks dating back to 3.55 billion years. Have lunch at Phophanyane Lodge before cycling back. Cycling distance: 10 kms. Degree of difficulty: 3/10

With bikes racked drive towards Piggs Peak town & shortly afterwards turn towards Maguga Dam. Cycle 20 kms from here to Maguga Lodge – very hilly. “Welcome to a place that exists solely to take your breath away. A hilly, tough start to the morning – cycle about 10 kms on tar & then 14 kms on dirt as we head towards Sibebe Rock, which is the world’s largest exposed granite dome and second biggest rock after Uluru (Ayers Rock) in Austrailia. Estimated to be about three billion years old, more than three times as old as its Australian counterpart. Rack bikes & drive to Hawane Resort. Framed by Malolotja’s majestic peaks rests Swaziland’s northern highland Paradise, Hawane Resort. the breathtaking beauty of the area and it’s spectacular views transport visitors into a mulit-dimensional experience which offer as much adventure, solitude, adrenaline or tranquility as desired. Cycle about 8 kms through lovely countryside to the Ngwenya glass factory. This is where Gary will meet us, & take us on a circular route on jeep tracks, cattle paths (single track) and unused railway lines. Then have lunch back at Ngwenya glass, where one can watch workers mould molten glass into different shapes & sizes. Drive to Forester’s Arms for our overnight. Cycling distance: 58 kms Degree of difficulty: 8/10

“Wake up to tea or coffee served in your bedroom and saunter through for a splendid breakfast served in the dining room or on the sun terrace”. Then we cycle through forest plantations to Malkerns. Rack bikes, have lunch & do a short visit to the National Museum & King Sobhuza Memorial Park, after which we drive to Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctury, where we stay in traditional beehive huts. After dinner you will see some Swazi tribal dancers!! Cycling distance: 30 kms Degree of difficulty: 7/10

OVERNIGHT: Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctury DB&B

After breakfast we cycle on the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctury Reserve, cycle for 3-4 hours on a mountain bike trail taking you into some of the beautiful mountains of Swaziland. Horseback riding for an hour or two is also an option. Sundowners will be enjoyed overlooking spectacular scenery! Cycling distance: 20 -50 kms Degree of difficulty: 6/10

Early morning cycle, breakfast, then drive to Nkonyeni Golf Estate, where we will spend the night. Enjoy a spa treatment or a round of golf in the afternoon!! Cycling distance: +- 10kms Degree of difficulty: 4/10

DAY 10
After breakfast, we cycle through natural forests, local villages, up & down until we reach the main road. We rack our bikes after 40 kms, then visit the Swaziland candle factory. Once all shopping is complete, we drive a short distance to our final destination, Summerfield Botannical Garden & Resort. Cycling distance: 40 kms Degree of difficulty: 9/10

Tuck into a breakfast like you have never experienced before!!! Sadly depart & travel to the airport in time to catch your flight.
