Gourmet Tour ReviewHi Liz and Chris, It was billed as the Gourmet Cycle Tour, and it certainly lived up to its billing. The combination of brilliant food and cycling in an exceptional environment was indeed a feast to remember. Basing the operation in the charming village of Prince Albert, with its friendly folk and lovely Victorian houses, set the scene for the spread that was to follow. Firstly, you and Chris were fantastic; always willing to go the extra mile whether it was racking or unracking bikes, giving gentle and valuable riding tips, and not letting up for a moment on checking on our comfort. Your hearty enthusiasm was catching, and yes, Liz, the hills do appear to flatten out when you reach them! Does anything ever get you down? Secondly, the cycling routes, which varied from easy to challenging, were superb. There cannot be many places in this country with such clean, clear skies, rugged and varied scenery. The exhilarating dash down the mountain to the amazing Meiringspoort Pass, not to mention the refreshing dip in the mountain pool, was a highlight for us, particularly with Di bursting spectacularly through all barriers on her maiden ride on the open road.. Dirt-road riding and a mountain bike experience were also firsts for me. And, of course, the food was exceptional. Jeremy Freemantle and his wonderful team at African Relish, maintained a standard that Di and I have not seen bettered in any South African restaurant. I can still taste the tender, succulent Kudu, the moist chicken and home-made pasta. My compliments to him, Virna, the enigmatic and talented Simone, Margie and Chantal. The visit to the fig farm was also memorable, and it is a pity that no French impressionists were around to paint that wonderful fig-based spread that Liezle laid on. The accommodation was comfortable, although we did not spend much time there with the crowded programme. Di and I have travelled to many parts of the world, and this experience ranks right up there with the best. We will certainly visit Prince Albert again in the not too distant future. Meanwhile, make sure your saddle is not too low! Kind regards, Derek and Di du Plessis |
